Prepare to Order Your Single Car Garage with Our Size Selection Guide

When preparing to order your single car garage, one of the most important questions you’ll probably ask is, “What size garage do I need?”. After your garage is built and delivered, you won’t be able to change the size even if you discover that your new garage is too small.

We’ve put together an infographic using 10 popular garage sizes to help you visualize how you could use a one-car garage.

Garage Use Considerations

As you’re thinking about the size, one important question to ask yourself is, “How will I be using my garage?” As you can see in the above infographic, there are many possible configurations for setting up your garage space. You could buy a garage that’s just big enough for your vehicle, or you could buy a garage with extra storage space too. If your garage is big enough you can even add a workshop.

If you need lots of storage space for small items, you should consider buying a lofted garage. A garage with a loft allows you to store smaller items up and out of the way, freeing up more valuable floor space.

Property Considerations When Choosing Garage Sizes

Before finalizing your garage size you should check to make sure that your township will approve the size and location of your new garage. Township requirements and restrictions vary widely on this issue, so if you’re not sure about your permissions you can check your township website or give them a call. You may be required to apply for a permit.

Your township may also have setback requirements (from the property lines) or height restrictions. Be sure to check into these details before finalizing your garage size.

Another issue related to garage size is water runoff. Your township may limit the percentage of your property that may be under roof in an effort to control water runoff. You may be able to mitigate this restriction by installing a stone pad under your garage to catch the water during rainfall.

Finally, make sure the garage size and style you choose will look good on your property. Stand at the end of your driveway and visualize what the garage will look like from the road. After all, if you invest in a garage you’ll want it to become a complimentary addition to your property.
